JAZZ DANCE is a rhythmic, percussive dance form seen primarily in commercial venues such as Broadway shows, The Academy Awards, dance revues and music videos. Evolving from a blend of European and African traditional social dances, it assimilated into the American culture, with Ballet and Modern Dance contributing to its elegance and African Dance providing its rhythmic propulsion and percussive style. Class is generally taught to top 40 hits.
Attire: Leotard, tight fitting shirt/tank, jazz pants, Capri’s, etc… slip on jazz shoes, foot undeez, or bare feet.
LYRICAL/MODERN dance is a jazz hybrid that maintains the percussive, rhythmic characteristics that define Jazz, but it incorporates elements of Ballet and Modern Dance to give it a smooth, lengthened look and lyrical quality.
Attire: Leotard, tight fitting shirt/tank top, jazz pants, Capri’s, etc...no shoes are worn.
HIP HOP is seen primarily on TV during rap and R & B music videos. It is a form that evolved out of street and break dancing moves, and is characterized by its vigorous athletics and bouncy style. Hip Hop is danced primarily to Hip Hop, Rap and R & B music.
Attire: Any thing goes...get funky be creative! Tennis shoes designated for studio wear only are required.
TUMBLING Tumbling is a floor style gymnastics ranging in level of difficulty from a basic cart wheel to aerial tricks such as back tucks.
Attire: For girls a leotard is mandatory with shorts or pants over the top. For boys a tight fitting t-shirt or tank top with shorts or sweats is appropriate. No shoes or socks are worn in this class. Extremely baggy pants can be a safety hazard as well as pants with zippers. Long hair must be pulled back into a low pony tail. Absolutely no jewelry is allowed.
BREAK is street to the max! Incorporating pop, lock, and acrobatic moves to achieve funky fresh style and flair is highly aerobic and strength building. Originally break dancing was a non-combative way for inner city males to compete against one another. Over the past two decades it has evolved to appeal to a wider audience but still maintains its own special flavor.
Attire: Anything goes! Tennis shoes designated for studio wear only are required ( Adidas classic three stripe are good for grip and flexibility)..
TAP is relatively self-explanatory in its percussive nature, however, Dance EFX teaches a more modern up to date "street" style tap that incorporates all the basics with style and flare.
ZUMBA is a dance fitness program created by dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez, in Columbia during the 1990's. The program combines international music with dance in an effort to make exercise fun!
HULA is the language of the heart. In the Hawaiian language HULA means “dance”. It is a dance from the Hawaiian Islands that tells a story using your hands and body. It is rich in culture, music, and spirit. HULA is both a physical workout and a spiritual journey that begins and ends with you, because no matter what, HULA is an expression of self. HULA students will focus on learning the basic steps and movements that are the fundamentals for HULA Kahiko (Ancient Hula) and HULA ‘Auana (Contemporary Hula). You will learn the underlying basic movements of the body in HULA. Proper foot work, hip technique, arm movement and grace will be taught as you are introduced to this beautiful cultural dance. From there, each succeeding HULA step is added in order of difficulty and importance. We culminate with HULA dances, using all the steps and movements taught. HULA puts a pounding in your heart and a whisper in your soul.
Attire: Sarong/Pareo/Beach Wrap with tank top or t-shirt. You can wear fitted Capri leggings or fitted shorts under the Sarong if you like. Bare feet required. If you do not have a Sarong, Leilani will have them for purchase.
Bellydance: Come learn what your hips are for! This beginning class focuses on breaking down the basic steps and movements that are the fundamentals for all the various styles of bellydance. Proper form, technique, and posture will be taught as you are introduced to the signature features of bellydance: muscle control and isolation. Bellydance is an invigorating, no-impact form of exercise that utilizes the entire body – feet, legs, hips, abdomen, shoulders, and arms. No previous dance experience or bare midriffs required.
